Explore the Indonesian Archipelagoes on board the 100 feet Baruna Adventurer. Ron and Valerie Taylor have described Komodo's marine environment as "the richest they have ever seen" |
|
Komodo is unique because it offers two totally different marine environments. In the north we experience the warm clear waters that flow from the Flores and Banda seas. The hard coral reefs are extensive and in pristine condition. To the south, we encounter cooler water that flows from the Indian Ocean. It is not unusual to encounter whales, whale sharks, mantas, sunfish and other plankton feeders during dives on the southern sites.
Upwelling caused by deep ocean currents colliding with the continental shelf force an endless supply of plankton food towards the surface resulting in a rich coral garden and feeding frenzy of large pelagic marine lifes.
When at anchor near reef areas it is open deck diving. After days of diving, divers can relax on the upper deck and watch Komodo Dragons wandering along on the beaches, or bargain with fishermen in dugouts for beautiful pearls. Night diving in the Komodo Marine Park takes the diver into a bizarre world of the strange, rare and beautiful.
WATER TEMPERATURE: 20 - 28 Degrees Celsius (68-85 ¡F), cooler water is experienced on the southern sites. Full wet suit & hood is recommended.
VISIBILITY: 10 - 50M all year round. Better visibility is usually found on the northern sites.
CURRENT: Komodo experiences a strong tidal flow but not all sites are totally affected by current. Drift diving is excellent. Favorable dive sites will be determined for diving.
NIGHT DIVING: The night diving in Komodo is breathtaking. The sheer beauty, color and diversity of marine life makes it a must see for all divers.
WALLS: There are numerous walls to choose from. Both drift and static wall dives are offered.
CANYONS: Huge chasms drop thousands of meters, fringed by extraordinary coral gardens.
OTHERS: Seamounts, fringing reefs, gutters, muck, and sandy locations are also found in the archipelago.
SNORKELLING: Komodo has one of the world's most famous snorkel sites (Pink Beach - Pantai Merah), and also a number of other first class locations.
OTHER ACTIVITIES: Most of the archipelago
is uninhabited. This means great fishing, dragon walks, nature walks, hiking,
beach-combing, early morning excursions or day trips can be arranged from the vessel at
your convenience.
SUMBAWA / MOYO A rugged mountainous terrain island stretches between Lombok and Flores
islands. Moyo island, off the north coast is a protected nature reserve with abundant
wildlife, fine beaches and splendid coral reefs.
KOMODO Komodo Island - famous habitat of the Komodo Dragon, the largest lizard extant.
This legendary island, together with its neighboring island Rinca belong to the Komodo
National Park, the only place where the Komodo "dragon" still lives and roams
freely. These secluded islands are dominated by wild eroded mountains and deserted bays
with fine pink and white sand beaches and a spectacular underwater world.
